For circuit breakers of low and medium voltage with a toggle or rocker on/off switch, Master Lock offer their 491B and 493B Grip Tight ™ lockout device.
The difference between the two versions is simply the width of the toggle lever that can be accommodated.
Hinging open the lockout device reveals a thumb screw which is tightened onto the breaker toggle. A screwdriver can be used for final tightening. When the two sides are hinged closed, a cam action causes the jaws to tighten their grip on to the breaker toggle, hence the name ‘grip tight’. At this point and isolation padlock can be placed on the lockout, preventing removal.
It should be noted that the device relies on a friction grip. For this reason, a danger tag should also be placed on the lockout point providing details of the lockout activity and warning against the consequences of forced removal.
Lockout Tagout Tryout is a procedure implemented in advance of maintenance work of machinery or energy sources. Its purpose is to prevent unexpected start-up or energization of the equipment which could lead to injury or death of workers.
